Your accommodated Fraser Island Self Drive adventure starts in Hervey Bay at our operator’s depot. You must have a compulsory briefing which can be held at 4.00pm the day before departure or at 6.00am on the day of departure. It is recommended that you arrive in Hervey Bay the day before departure to ensure you are available to depart as arranged. You will need to buy food and other items for your self drive Fraser Island accommodated trip.
At your briefing you will watch a video on four wheel driving on Fraser Island. You will be told the laws that apply for Fraser Island and you will be taught driving tips on safe driving in sandy conditions. As all the roads on Fraser Island are sandy four wheel drive tracks you need to pay attention to everything that is said at the briefing. You will also be given a map and a suggested itinerary designed to suit the conditions for your time on Fraser Island.
Making your way along the sandy road that leads into Happy Valley you will see the accommodation with a sign out the front that says “Creature Comforts Cottages”.
The accommodation at Happy Valley is conveniently located about halfway along the famous 75 mile beach which gives you good access either by inland roads or by the main beach at low tide to all of the major attractions of Fraser Island.
After your briefing you will head off in your four wheel drive for the barge crossing to Fraser Island. Winding your way through the sandy roads of Fraser Island you will have time to stop and take in some of the points of interest along the way before finding your way to the Happy Valley Accommodation.
The accommodation at Happy Valley is clean and has a self contained kitchen with a small refrigerator inside your accommodation, a microwave oven and kitchen sink also inside your cottage. The accommodation has a double bed in a private room and 3 single bunks in another room as well as a shower and toilet facility inside your accommodation. Linen is supplied.
This accommodation is suitable for couples or families with up to 5 people. Larger groups can also be catered for.
Other rooms at our operator’s accommodation are available for single travelers with quad share rooms available.
The outside area is well laid out with a large refrigerator and a large gas barbeque for your use. Tables and seating for families or groups are provided and there is a lounge and extra seating in the outside area. If you don’t feel like cooking you make your way over the road to Fraser Island Backpackers where you can purchase reasonably priced restaurant meals.
A staff member visits the cottages daily to perform maintenance and to make sure equipment is operating and everything is as it should be.
The advantages of doing an accommodated self drive trip to Fraser Island are obvious. You don’t have to worry about setting up and pulling down a campsite so have more time driving on Fraser Island and more time to see the attractions.
You are more comfortable snuggling into a proper bed of a night instead of a sandy campsite.
You have better facilities for cooking and storing food as well as tables and chairs to sit at while eating.
The outside area at the accommodation is completely covered giving protection from the weather if it should rain.
You are able to shower and have a private toilet.
Being located at the halfway point on Fraser Island you are able to maximize what you see and do on Fraser Island, one day heading north with less traveling time and being able to spend more time at the Maheno Shipwreck, Indian Head, Eli Creek and the Coloured Sands.
You can time your return to Hervey Bay to take in the southern attractions like Lake Wabby, Eurong Beach Resort, Lake McKenzie, Central Station and other places before boarding the afternoon barge for the return trip back to Hervey Bay.
A 3 day hire is recommended to give you the time to take in all of the main attractions. 1 day and 2 day hires can be a rushed trip giving you little time at each place to relax and soak up the atmosphere.
